Artistic Statement

I dance. I choreograph. I tell stories. I educate. I collaborate. I do all this through movement.

When I dance, I think about the physical challenges of the body. I question how years of innate and trained movement can be rediscovered, sensitized and reworked so I can give movement meaning, abstract it and then find meaning again. I explore the function of my body and the bodies of others as we work together to create dance. I want simple gestures to be mesmerizing and I want to test the complexity of weight and gravity.

My creation of dance usually comes from the thoughts and ideas festering inside my brain and body. They bubble and toil until the right opportunity or time presents itself to be heard. My subject matter stems from human commonalities. I explore the things that bring us joy, the everyday mundane and even the darkest parts of our humanity. I am deeply interested in tensions that influence decision making and perspectives. I like to research, investigate, think and rethink about what connects us and what divides us.

Whether creating for a live stage or for work on camera, I want to find intersections between me, my dancers and my collaborators. I want to find what links movement to music including the spaces between the notes. I want to give my audience not only entertainment but food for thought. I want everyone I work and share with to be invested in the exploration of humanity, to be touched at a personal level, to peak their curiosity and to respond through discussion or action. This meeting of bodies, minds, and creativity is where I thrive and experiment.
